A portrait begins with a discussion of what the sitter or person commissioning the work would like the portrait to be. I work from a combination of life and my own photographs. I can work from others’ photographs but prefer not to. The first, and sometimes only, sitting is used to take photos and to do some kind of study, either a drawing or a color study. This gives me a chance to become familiar with the subject. This can be done in my studio, in Newburgh, New York, or in the subject’s space. It generally takes around three months to complete a portrait. This of course varies with the complexity of the image. I can work within a tighter deadline but better results are yielded when I have time to live with the painting and let it develop with careful thought.
